Reflection On Town Hall

The AMS, in collaboration with SGPS, hosted a town hall meeting Friday afternoon.

The town hall was productive. The most notable part was the feedback delivered to the executive team from attendees.  The Executive team believes that feedback is an invaluable way to improve, and the feedback delivered is critical to navigating the upcoming year.

Through questions and feedback presented by attendees, we reflected that the AMS should reevaluate its understanding of who this issue affects, while continuing to take a strong stance by advocating for their undergraduate membership. We want to continue to encourage our students to attend events that attempt to foster and encourage transparency within our mostly bureaucratic systems at Queen’s.

Before the town hall, the AMS supported the SGPS on Instagram by reposting graphics and collaborating on hosting the town hall for all of their memberships. We value the strength in the AMS and SGPS relationship which advocate for their membership and continue to look forward to working with admin to advocate for transparency in all decisions made that could affect students.

We would also like to share the following part from President Rocchi’s most recent Board of Trustees speech regarding budget austerity:

If these changes can’t be proactively communicated and supported by clear rationale and proof of research, students have no choice but to think the worst of them… More consultation with elected leaders within the AMS and SGPS can help Queens to re-build trust with the student body, as they know that their elected representatives have a chance to add their point of view and input. I’ll make it clear that I know at the end of the day that these decisions will be made by the administration, but students must be asked to provide context and any information that could be relevant to the university to ensure productive decision making.”

Thank you for sharing your feedback at this time, the AMS is continuingly learning how to best support its membership.
