Room to Read: Queen’s is an official chapter of the award-winning non-profit organization Room to Read. We are a group of students dedicated to improving the lives of people around the world through education. Room to Read: Queen’s runs a number of events to inform the Queen’s and Kingston communities about the lack of educational resources in many parts of the world, and to fundraise for programs predominantly in developing areas of Asia and Africa. Our flagship event of the year is the Live-in for Literacy, whereby two students live, eat and sleep in Stauffer Library for seven consecutive days to raise awareness and funds for the issue. To date, our movement has raised over $170,000 to fund 9 libraries in Nepal, 5 libraries in rural India, a computer lab in Cambodia, the publication of 10,000 local language books in India, as well as educational scholarship for girls in the developing world.

Room to Read believes that “World Change Starts with Educated Children”. We envision a world in which all children can pursue a quality education that enables them to reach their full potential and contribute to their community and the world. Room to Read Queen’s seeks to involve the Queen’s and Kingston communities in learning about the benefits of education for children in developing areas of the world, and in realizing the potential for change.
