Meet the Commissioner of Environmental Sustainability and the Social Issues Commissioners

Our Commissioner of Environmental Sustainability and Social Issues Commissioners wanted to take a moment to introduce themselves. You can meet Anne, Jana, and Kaan in the Queen’s Centre from 12-4, September 25th.

Commissioner of Environmental Sustainability, Anne Fu (Any Pronouns)

Howdy! My name is Anne, and I am very excited to be serving as your Commissioner of Environmental Sustainability (CES) this year at the AMS. A little bit about me: I’m a fourth year student in Health Sciences, and my name in Chinese means ‘spring grass’ even though I was born on Christmas Eve.

Growing up in the suburbs of Hamilton, Ontario, I admit I rarely thought about the environment until I wrote an article for my high school newspaper about a movement to combat suburban sprawl in my neighbourhood. It was then I began to realize how integral the natural world was to every aspect of my life. When I came to Queen’s, I joined the club Queen’s Backing Action on the Climate Crisis as a first year, and spent the next several years of my studies participating in environmental activism and student leadership.

As the CES, I’m passionate about creating new and exciting opportunities to get students involved in environmental action by preparing an enhanced slate of student-facing events. I also hope to push the AMS, the university, the city, and the province’s climate agendas forwards through policy and advocacy that prioritizes student interests. Finally, as someone who has been previously involved in social justice work at Queen’s, I hope to bring a more intersectional and inclusive ethos to the CES’ environmental initiatives, via education and programming.

If you’d like to stop by and have a chat with me, I’ll be in my office at LaSalle Building from 2-5 PM every Wednesday this year. Whether we cross paths at one of our several Sustainability Hub events or happen upon each other while swapping clothes at the Collective Closet, I can’t wait to meet you all! Social Issues Commissioner (External), Kaan Sumer (Any Pronouns)

Hello! I’m Kaan, the Social Issues Commissioner (External). I’m passionate about the SIC because as early as middle school, I remember being very aware of injustices both in my community and across the globe. But even before that, I’ve always been very excited to express my thoughts, share things I’ve learnt and help people learn new things alongside me! One could argue it was only natural I found my way into the SIC, and I wouldn’t be one to disagree! The joy I feel when I get to be an agent in someone pursuing their curiosities and learning things they have never thought of before is only comparable to seeing a rainbow for the first time.

For the SIC’s projects in the Fall term, I’m particularly very excited about this year’s rendition of Productive Pastimes. I am hoping to see a lot of interesting conversations through our book club meetings, and movie nights, etc. I know it’s going to be a blast, so I hope to see everyone involved! As you’ll get to know me, you’ll quickly discover my enamoration with the arts! Anything from literature to music, performance arts, visual arts, video games, cartoons, voice acting, minecraft building challenges… I am always fascinated by people’s talents and all the different ways they choose to express themselves, and being able to feature and highlight so many artists in the SIC makes me super excited!

If you wish to meet with me for whatever reason(s), I will make myself available every week at these times:

Monday 10h30-11h30

Tuesday 11h00-12h00

Thursday 11h00-12h00

Social Issues Commissioner (Internal), Jana Amer (She/Her)

Hey folk! I’m Jana Amer (she/her), a Bachelor of Health Sciences (Honours) student, and I’m beyond honoured to be this year’s Social Issues Commissioner (SIC) Internal. I’ve always been passionate about creating spaces where everyone feels heard, represented, and supported. These spaces have always been a sanctuary for me, and I hope to create that same sense of safety and belonging for others. I believe that equity work is all about collaboration—it takes all of our diverse lived experiences and beliefs to build a truly inclusive and safe environment. This role allows me the opportunity to help amplify those voices and work on meaningful projects that bring us closer to that goal.

One project I’m looking forward to is expanding the Menstrual Equity Project (MEP). We’re introducing sustainable menstrual products, making access easier and more environmentally friendly. It’s a simple way to improve students’ lives and make the campus a bit more supportive for everyone.

I’m also excited to reformat the Equity Townhalls to make them more open and inclusive and enhance dialogue. These townhalls are such an important space for students to raise concerns and have real conversations about issues affecting our Queen’s community. By fostering more welcoming and productive discussions, I hope to help create meaningful change based on what students really care about.

I’m especially eager to relaunch the Equity Caucus, which brings together all I-EDIAA Faculty and Society representatives alongside with delegates from all cultural and equity-focused groups. Together, we will help build connections, share resources, and amplify voices across campus. I can’t wait to see what we’ll accomplish together!

I love connecting with students, so please feel free to reach out or stop by my office hours—I’d love to chat!
