What is Assembly?

AMS Assembly is the highest legislative body in the undergraduate student government. All members of the AMS are welcome to attend Assembly where they can move or second motions, speak for or against any motions and, in the event of the Annual General Meeting, may vote on motions being considered by the Society.

Assembly fulfills its mandate by debating reports, recommendations and motions as submitted by AMS Council, the Faculty Societies or any individual AMS member. It is constitutionally empowered to direct the Executive, Council or Board of Directors as they carry out their duties consistent with the best interests of AMS members.

But what is it really?

A place where you, as an AMS member, can take an active role in the development of the decisions that affect your student experience.

Assembly Composition

The AMS Speaker chairs AMS Assembly. The Speaker is responsible for facilitating and mediating discussion and debate.

The AMS Secretariat plans Assembly and ensures that processes are in accordance with policy. The Secretariat creates biweekly Assembly agendas and releases the minutes within five business days of each meeting.

Any AMS member-at-large can attend Assembly, however voting rights are only given to members-at-large at the Annual General Meeting. All positions below that do not have voting rights are marked by an asterisk.

The Secretariat exists to support student initiatives, uphold order and justice, and to promote the involvement of students in the democratic process of student government. The Secretary is responsible for all matters concerning AMS Assembly, the Administration of the AMS, and Faculty Society Elections and Referenda. The Secretary serves as the corporate secretary of the AMS Board of Directors and is responsible for being a resource on AMS Policy.
