AMS Attends Student Advocacy Conference 2024
“I see the Student Advocacy Conference as an opportunity to apply all facets of OUSA and the benefits it offers to not just our student leaders but the entire undergraduate community at Queens” Commissioner of External Affairs George.
On the week of November 19th, the AMS participated in the Student Advocacy Conference at Queen’s Park, The Provincial Legislature in Toronto.
Throughout the week, the AMS met with over 18 MPP’s and government stakeholders; including the Parliamentary Assistant for the Ministry of Municipalities and Transportation.
Each year, delegates from each OUSA member association meet with legislators and staffers to discuss the most important issues in post-secondary education. During the week, delegates highlight the recommendations OUSA will be making to the government and ministries to the Members of Provincial Parliament.
As a result of the OUSA conference in May, this year the priorities for OUSA’s advocacy are housing insecurity, food insecurity, investing in the post-secondary sector and responses to hate-motivated attacks.
A major take away for Commissioner of External Affairs George and Vice President University Affairs Osunde, is communicating to government stakeholders and partners to better understand their reasoning for decisions and utilizing some of the best practices for informing and advocating for student interests in those environments. Furthermore, this conference is an invaluable opportunity to establish connections with politicians to best advance student interests.
