Amended Motions for AMS November Special General Meeting Happening November 18th, 2024
Dear Students,
On Monday November 18th, 2024, President of the AMS met with The Journal Editors-in-Chiefs to listen and understand the concerns brought forward relating to the proposed motions. While the motions have been internally updated and communicated to The Journal since Friday, the following amendments are now public.
The motions have been updated to the following:
Motion 9 “That AMS Assembly approve amendments to enhance accountability of independent systems in the AMS under Section 9 and Section 14 of the AMS Constitution as presented in Appendix E-1″
Section 9.3.6 is being added to the AMS Constitution: The Judicial Affairs Managers are responsible to the AMS Assembly and by extension, the Society and are required to submit written reports to the Secretariat within 72 hours of receiving notice, which will be provided to the AMS Assembly. In their capacity as the political representative of the Judicial System, the Secretariat may answer question(s) of the AMS Assembly as they arise. With the explicit permission of the Secretariat, any member of Assembly may request the Judicial Affairs Managers to attend assembly during the question period by delivering notice to the Secretariat. Proper notice to the Judicial Affairs Managers is considered delivered if provided with the release of the Agenda.
14.1.4 (This section already exists in the Constitution): The Editor(s)-in-Chief shall be responsible to the Assembly and, by extension, the Society, that the Queen’s Journal does not contain any material which is of a seditious, libelous, or scandalous nature, or which constitutes invasion of privacy or violation of copyright or proprietary right.
- Section 14.1.4 (I) is being added to the AMS Constitution: For this reason, the Editor(s)-in-Chief, are required to submit written reports to the Secretariat within 72 hours of receiving notice, which will be provided to the AMS Assembly. Any member of Assembly may request the Editor(s)-in-Chief to attend assembly during the question period by delivering notice to the Secretariat. The Editor(s)-in-Chief must attend or appoint a proxy when notified with proper notice delivered with the release of the Agenda
Motion 10 “That AMS Assembly exercise its jurisdiction under Section 2.1.4 and, 2.1.6 of the AMS Constitution and require that a policy pertaining to section 14.1.4 be presented to the AMS Assembly for approval by April 30th, 2025 AND establish an Ad-hoc Committee to support the review of policy, with a mandate and composition to be presented to December 2024 Assembly following consultations with the Journal
