A statement on recent Non-binary, Trans, and 2SLGBTQIA+ protests

September 20th, 2023

Across Canada, including Kingston, protests are being held to object school curriculum focusing on gender identity and gender expression. These demonstrations target the Non-binary, Trans and 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, who are an active part of our campus community.

As members of the Queen’s community, we must continue to foster a safe and inclusive environment for all students, condemning the hate and discrimination that these protests bring. Every student has a role to play in ensuring our communities and spaces protect human rights, which are actively anti-oppressive and celebrate free expression and authenticity.

The demonstrations are profoundly appalling to witness and may be distressing for Non-binary, Trans and 2SLGBTQIA+ students. If you or someone you know needs any support during this time, please contact any of the following services, spaces or programs on campus. The Peer Support Centre located in the Rideau Building offers peer to peer counselling, as well as Queers 4 Peers, who offer confidential and empathetic sessions during which Queer-identifying volunteers listen to Queer students and provide helpful resource referrals. The Yellow House also offers space, advising, programming, and services for students who identify as Queer, Non-binary, Trans, Black, Indigenous, and/or as People of Colour (QTBIPoC). Empower Me, provided through StudentCare, offers 24/7 mental health and wellness support. For immediate safety concerns, call 911 or Campus Security and Emergency Services.
