Walkhome History

 

Fall 1988: The Walkhome service was established in response to numerous sexual and physical assaults on and around campus. AMS executive members and commissioners answered phones and Student Constables gave the first walks

 

April 1989: $1.00 student interest fee established to buy equipment and publicize the service. It is currently $13.51.

 

2001: Walkhome employees did over 10,000 walks over the 2000-2001 year for the first time ever!

 

2002: Walkhome made Maclean’s “What’s Hot” list in the annual university rankings.

 

2008: Walkhome celebrates its 20th Birthday as Canada’s largest student run “safewalk” program. Over 20 years it has grown to over 140 staff and 11,000 walks a year, making it a model for similar “safewalk” services across the country.
