Recognition Policy Under Review

After careful and deliberate discussion, on June 24th, the AMS Assembly has unanimously voted to suspend the Recognition Policy. This decision comes after thoughtful consideration and feedback from stakeholders.

As a part of the regular policy review process that takes place early in the summer, it became apparent that the current Recognition Policy requires clearer stipulations before it is used for the first time. We believe by suspending the policy, the AMS will be able to undertake a thorough review of the financial and procedural aspects of the policy and mitigate any unintended consequences of the policy. We are committed to protecting the autonomy and wellbeing of students involved in the procedures outlined by the policy, and ensuring the policy meets its intended mandate.

Additionally, the delicate nature of the policy requires it to be a thoughtful and thorough implementation. This includes creating comprehensive training to ensure the equitable delivery of the policy. This training is essential for the student leaders responsible to safely implement these guidelines within the policy.

We are committed to a thorough review of the policy to ensure procedural aspects reflect our commitment and understanding of building an alliance with equity-deserving groups on -campus. The suspension will be temporary. In September, more information will be released on how students and student groups can contribute to the policy review process.
