Part-Time Postions

Why work for an AMS Service?

The Alma Mater Society runs seven services that employ students on a part-time basis.  These services allow you to develop practical skills and gain valuable new experiences while providing a valued service to the Queen’s community. In addition to the knowledge that you will gain from working at an AMS service, you will also connect with fellow staff members and forge friendships with other amazing students from outside your residence, year, faculty, or program. The peer-to-peer work environment is also a benefit of working for the AMS; all managers are students themselves, and can therefore empathize with the possible stresses that come with being a student. While maintaining the professionalism and quality service that the Queen’s community has come to expect, AMS service managers also recognize your personal needs as a student.

All AMS services require no past work experience, so this is the perfect opportunity to try something new!

When do I apply?
All AMS services run two hiring periods. For a given work term, which is the duration of an academic year, approximately 85% of staff are hired during March of the previous academic year, and the remaining 15% are hired at the beginning of the academic year of their term of employment, typically in late September. The September hiring period is reserved for first-year students, students who are visiting Queen’s on exchange, students who were away on exchange during the March hiring period for that work term, and students who have qualified for Work Study funding through Student Awards.

Updated application deadlines can be found on the Apply Now page and are advertised in a variety of campus media.

Am I eligible to work at the AMS?
In order to be eligible for a position, you must be a current Queen’s student, be enrolled in at least 3.0 Arts & Science (or equivalent) credits, and have paid the mandatory AMS Student Activity fees.  Applicants are allowed to apply for up to three AMS services, but are only allowed to work for one service at a time.

As mentioned above, in order to be eligible to apply in September to work for a service, you must be either a first-year students, a student who is visiting Queen’s on exchange, a student who was away on exchange during the preceding March hiring period, or have qualified for Work Study funding through Student Awards.

I’m an international student. Can I work for the AMS?
Working for the AMS is an amazing opportunity to meet new people, and broaden your Queen’s experience! A study permit allows international (both degree-seeking and those visiting Queen’s on exchange) to work on-campus while studying at Queen’s as long as they are a full-time student. If hired, your manager will provide you with the paperwork to apply for a S.I.N (Social Insurance Number), so you can be paid by the AMS. If you have any questions whatsoever about working as an international student, please don’t hesitate to ask the QUIC (Queen’s University International Centre); they’re a great on-campus resource for international students, especially in terms of employment. You can find lots of information at www.quic.queensu.ca.

How do I apply?
Applications for part-time positions for 2010-2011 will be available at least two weeks prior to the deadline. You can get one online or by stopping by the AMS front desk, which is located in the lower John Deutsch University Centre (JDUC). Applications can also be obtained directly from service managers. If you stop by to pick-up an application at a service, take a moment to chat-up a current staff member or manager to hear first-hand what it’s like to work there. Applications will be due March 19th, by 4 p.m. at the AMS front desk. You can apply for more than one service (up to a maximum of three) by completeing a separate application for each service.

Does everyone get an interview?
This depends on how many people apply to work at the service. If the number of applicants compared to the number of positions available exceeds a ratio of 3:1, then there will be a screening process prior to interviews to reduce the number of interviewees to a ratio of 3:1, not to exceed 250 interviewees. For example, if the Student Constables are hiring 50 new staff members, and 250 people apply, then they would screen the applicants so that they are only interviewing 150 (in keeping with the 3:1 ratio).

This screening process will be done by blind assesment of the applicants' written responses to the questions included on the Service Staff Application Form (i.e. personal information will not be attached to the applicants' written answers for assesment). In the instance that this process in insufficient to reduce the number of applicants to the desired ratio, a random lottery may be used to reduce the number of interviewees to the ratio of 3:1.
