MAC - Municipal Affairs Commission
The Municipal Affairs Commission has 3 important and overarching goals. First, we advocate for student interests at a municipal level. The MAC lobbies various levels of government on municipal issues including property standards, Kingston waste programs, and snow removal. Our second role is to facilitate opportunities for students to volunteer in the Kingston community. Within the second role, students participate in a variety of activities, including tutoring elementary and high school students, fundraising for the United Way, and learning the Kingston property standard laws in order to provide free housing checks for other students. Finally, the MAC helps to prepare students for moving into housing. The MAC provides a comprehensive housing guide and can be your resource for all things housing!
What the MAC Can Do for You
The MAC is your resource for everything from landlord-tenant issues, leases, and property standards to information about the City of Kingston. Services for students that are run out of the MAC include the Student Property and Dwelling Education committee (SPADE), an interactive housing map, Holiday Housecheck, and soon to come, a Housing Grievance Centre. SPADE provides free home inspections to students and the Holiday Housecheck program (run by SMART) assigns students to check houses, improving the security of student homes and reducing concerns about break-ins over the winter break. Holiday Housecheck employs students who stomp down snow, collect mail and alert authorities if they observe any suspicious activity.
For extensive information about living in the community check out the Student Affairs website. It focuses around four main pillars: Safety at Home, Safety on Campus, Safety Online, and Personal Safety. If you have a specific concern, this website will likely address it.
The Kingston Transit Trip Planner shows you how to get where you are going by bus. If you type in your starting point and desired destination, it will offer up bus trip plans to get you there – including transfers and pick-up times. Find it online at www.cityofkingston.ca/tripplanner. Remember, students ride free with student cards!
